Womyn's Centre
The Carleton University Womyn’s Centre is a feminist space dedicated to challenging and organizing against all forms of oppression both on and off campus. We provide students with a grassroots feminist space which takes pride in upholding a critical standard with the intent to build solidarity on our university campus. Our space is used for a variety of purposes, firstly it is a space where folks can gather, talk, exchange ideas, and gain support. Don’t let the name fool you though, the Womyn’s Centre is a space for those who identify as womyn but also anyone interested in gendered based issues.
The Womyn’s Centre provides womyn-identified folks with free male/female condoms, pregnany tests, menstrual products (pads, tampons, pantyliners), and a wealth of resources and material. We also have a library that contains more than just academic feminist material. We have the only womyn’s only space on campus. All womyn-identified folks can use this quiet space for resting, prayer, breastfeeding, and self-care. Why the y? The word ‘woman’ refers to ‘of man’ implying that a woman’s identity is inherently reliant on man. We believe that womyn deserve an identity of their own which is why the Womyn’s Centre embraces and celebrates a women-centred culture. In spelling womyn with a “Y”, we recognize that womyn have diverse and different identities and roles which are not all defined by a relationships to men (or dictionaries!). |
